Bible Records the names of only 3 sons of Adam and Eve. That has led to many asking various questions. Some of them are sincere enquiries, whilst others with, ‘not so good intentions’.
Biblical Scholars, both Jewish and Christian agree that the Bible is NOT written chronologically. Most times it appears to have been “Recorded TOPICALLY”. That is according to various “Incidents that took place” and also certain “Aspects of what GOD Has DONE and Promises to DO”, as well as “Events that are Prophesied would happen later” etc.
Genesis Chapter 1 Records the “Creation”, day by day.
Chapter 2 gives more details about the “making of Adam and Eve” and Records the “First Marriage”. Chapter 3 States about the ‘Fall or Disobedience’ and its consequences. Chapter 4 Records the “First Human Death”, which sadly was a murder.
In Chapter 5 only the “Genealogy” of Adam and Eve is given.
Another important factor to be borne in mind is that, initially the “Books” in the Bible were NOT divided into “Chapters and Verses”. It was first divided into “Chapters” in AD 1227 and the “Complete Division into Chapters and Verses”, first appeared in the “Geneva Bible” published in AD 1560.
At times it even appears as if certain Verses that should have come in the subsequent Chapter had got included in the ‘Previous one’ and vice versa.
Coming back to the Children of Adam an Eve, Genesis Chapter 4 Verse 25 clearly states Eve saying “GOD Has Given me another child ‘in PLACE of Abel’, since Cain killed him” and so called him “SETH”, which could mean ‘Granted, in place of’.
Then Chapter 5 Verse 3 states, Adam was 130 YEARS OLD, WHEN SETH WAS BORN.
The FIRST Command GOD Gave, as Chapter 1 Verse 28 Records is “INCREASE AND MULTIPLY AND FILL THE EARTH”.
So, who in his right mind can assume that “For 128 or so years, Adam kept Eve as an ornament or something”. They would have had SO MANY OTHER CHILDREN, during that period which EXCEEDS 125 YEARS”.
Genesis 5 : 4 states that after Seth was born also “Adam had other sons and daughters”. That was AFTER the age of 130. So how many MORE children Adam and Eve would have had, PRIOR TO THAT?
THAT is WHY Genesis 4:13 &14 state Cain, who would have been at least 125 then, saying “My punishment is more than I can bear …. and ANYONE who finds me WILL KILL ME”. Precisely what, he had done.
WHY did he say ‘anyone’ or according to the context even “Whoever”? Because he KNEW how well the earth WAS POPULATED by that time.
Bible does NOT mention “the BIRTHS of ALL the People”.
It names ONLY those who are RELEVANT to the narrative.
Even where “Genealogies” are concerned, certain names mentioned in one Chapter are NOT recorded in another.
Here is a clear example: Genesis Chapter 10 gives the Genealogies of the 3 sons of Noah.
Coming to the “Genealogy of Shem”, Verse 22 names his 5 sons. Arphaxad is the THIRD son mentioned there.
BUT Chapter 11 Verse 10 states ONLY the name of Arphaxad and IGNORES the names of the OTHER 4, given in 10:22.
WHY? Because Chapter 11 Records the “Lineage that leads upto ABRAM”, whose name was later changed by GOD to “ABRAHAM” [Genesis 17:5] the name that most are familiar with. The names of the other 4 are sons of Shem are ‘dropped’ in Chapter 11 because they were IRRELEVANT to the narrative.
Another important matter is that MOST times the NAMES of GIRLS are NOT included in the genealogies. That does NOT mean “Girls were not born”.
Exodus 6:20 mentions the names “Aaron and Moses” as offspring of Amram and Jochebed, but does NOT mention MIRIAM, the elder sister.
In conclusion. When Cain killed Abel, Adam and Eve would have been around 128 [Genesis 4:25 to 5:3].
By that time the earth would have been quite well populated, as GOD’S very FIRST Command was to “Increase and Multiply and FILL THE EARTH” [ Genesis 1:28]
Initially brothers and sisters would have had physical relationships and subsequently cousins and so on.
Though sad to say so, that kind of thing happens in the modern world too.
